I signed up for the free debit card that PayPal offers. You can then use that and go take out any or all of your money immediately at any ATM in the country (no waiting period). You can also use it to make purchases under the Mastercard logo.

The only inference I can make from eBay's actions this past year, is that John Donahoe is an arrogant fool. He is literally killing the proverbial "golden goose," as one comment on glassdoor.com said. As an EX-powerseller, I can only agree. (Left a few months ago).

I agree, and am maintaining a near-zero balance at PayPal as well. The recent news (Sept 15, 2008) that eBay may be laying off half its workforce is a sign of deterioration. I do not expect PayPal to remain healthy if eBay gets sick. Expected declines in eBay listings will have an adverse effect on PayPal as well.

It would take a big pile of money to create and run a non-profit marketplace the size of eBay. I don't see it happening with a donate button on the home page.
eBay may suck in a lot of ways but it would be a tremendous loss to sellers if it was "taken down"

Yes, there is an additional fee for a BIN price but it is negligible for the most part. The fee ranges from 5 cents to 25 cents depending on the price of your item. If you are selling very low priced items, items under $5, then maybe it wouldn't make sense to change the strategy. However, for most sellers selling items that are more expensive the increased exposure should more than pay off in higher ASPs and an increased inventory turn. Anyway, for most sellers I think that the marginal benefits will outweigh the marginal costs of the increased fees.

The primary difference between eBay and it's 50lb gorilla competitors is traffic. Most other sites do well with media, antiques, junk and small items, but do poorly with major (>$200 value) items.

I see a lot of the competing sites talk about how their millions of seller listings is better than eBay, but fail to show that any real sales volume is occurring.

The ASP and STR data points are just data. Each need to be taken into context, filtering out the occasional exceptions. I wish, and have frequently requested, that competing sites offer 1/10th of the data available to eBay sellers.

Like the management or not, eBay still is the 800lb gorilla with a bunch of kids running around.

you do realize that there's an additional fee for BIN, proportionate to the BIN price? Makes it MORE expensive, and ebay makes more money. Whose side are you on?
